Lemonade Day is coming to Anchorage! The UAA College of Business and Public Policy and UA Center for Economic Development are pleased to bring Lemonade Day Alaska to Anchorage May 1, 2011.

Overview. Lemonade Day™ (LD) is a national program created by Prepared for Life (P4L) which teaches youth business and leadership lessons using lemonade stands. LD is currently in approximately 26 US cities with plans to grow to 100 cities by 2013. If you haven’t already you might want to check out-www.LemonadeDay.org

Lemonade Day is a proven, dynamic, education program. Imagine the powerful experience of young people learning everything necessary to run their own company, while they’re also learning valuable life lessons! Lemonade Day teaches young people how to start, own, and operate their own businesses. They learn how to:

· Set goals · Find investors · Select a site · Advertise & promote
· Build a ”store” · Purchase supplies · Make a product · Serve customers
· Tally receipts · Balance sales & expenses · Open a bank account · Give back to their community.

Why –

K-12 & Entrepreneurial Capacity Building

Alaska ranks low in entrepreneurial capacity and climate. While Alaska has many entrepreneurs when considered on a per capita basis the state scores low on entrepreneurial climate based on national metrics. Encouraging both leadership and entrepreneurial skill building at an early age is key to improving these metrics and more importantly ensuring Alaska’s economic future.

Alaska also ranks highest in the nation in percent of children with no parent working full-time, year-round. Overall, 12% of children in Alaska live below the poverty level. Alaska’s rural remote communities have poverty rates greater than 25%. Lemonade Day is designed to empower youth living in poverty by teaching them the fundamentals of sound business and financial management.

Lemonade Day provides a fun and interactive way to teach important business fundamentals and has the potential to change lives. The real payoff may be years down the road, but the effects of teaching financial literacy early in life are immediate. For many youth Lemonade Day is their first experience in earning money, opening a bank account, setting financial goals, and investing a portion of their profits in the community.

Young people participate for free. It begins when they register to participate and receive Lemonade Day backpacks full of resources. The young person and a caring adult mentor complete each lesson together. Children put their new knowledge and skills to work when they open for business on May 1st, with their very own lemonade stand.

Lemonade Day engages the entire community. Anchorage businesses, non-profits and, more importantly, children and parents throughout the community participate, as well as volunteer and financial support. Kids of all ages, from pre-K through high school, can participate and schools, youth and faith-based organizations, neighborhoods, media, and local businesses join together to celebrate the creativity, determination and newly found confidence of the young entrepreneurs.

Opportunity UAA is actively trying to involve other community leaders and volunteers to implement Lemonade Day with a targeted goal of reaching 1100 Alaska kids through involvement in a lemonade stand. Please add your endorsement and join us in reaching and inspiring youth throughout our city. Lemonade Day will be held the first Sunday in May – May 1st, 2011.
