The Doyon Foundation’s Workforce Development Program is pleased to announce the success of its inaugural Introduction to the Trades course. Rural high school students from across the Interior attended the weeklong training this April, hosted in partnership with the Alaska Laborers Training School (AKLTS) and the Fairbanks Pipeline Training Center (FPTC).

Nine students from rural communities, including McGrath, Fort Yukon, Galena, Nicholai, and Koyukuk, participated in the program. Over the course of the week in Fairbanks, students engaged in hands-on activities with Laborers instructors, building skills in formwork, scaffolding, concrete work, dirt work, and more. They also completed a First Aid/CPR course and learned the basics of using both manual and power tools.
Instructors and staff were impressed by the students’ engagement, strong work ethic, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. Students and chaperones stayed in the dormitory on the FPTC campus, which is designed to mirror a North Slope camp. Evenings were spent participating in community activities, building peer relationships, and developing practical life skills. The group also welcomed peers from the Yukon Koyukuk School District’s CTE program for pizza and Workforce Bingo one evening.
On the final day, union representatives from Plumbers & Pipefitters, Teamsters, IBEW, Operators, and other trades participated in a panel discussion, sharing real-world insights on how to apply for, learn, and succeed in their fields. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and take part in hands-on activities, reinforcing the trades as viable and rewarding career pathways.
Volunteers from the Alaska Job Center, UAF College of Business, Doyon, Limited, and Tanana Chiefs Conference supported students in building resumes and practicing interview skills, helping boost their confidence in the employment process.
The week concluded with a graduation ceremony, where students received certificates of completion along with their CPR/First Aid cards. We are incredibly proud of these students and look forward to seeing what they accomplish next. The Doyon Foundation remains committed to expanding opportunities for Shareholders and their descendants through continued collaboration and programs like this one.
