The Alaska Moving Image Preservation Association (AMIPA) is hosting a special event in conjunction with the Ray Wise Mala Film Festival. This event will feature excerpts from many different films in Mala’s career, and comments from: Lael Morgan, the author of the new Mala biography, “Eskimo Star”; Ted Mala, Jr., grandson of Ray Mala; anthropologist Ann Fienup-Riordan, author of “Freeze Frame: Alaska Eskimos in the Movies”; and Bob Huntsman, who has been working on identifying the uncredited Alaska Natives who appear in the Mala film, “Eskimo” (1933). Note that the names Mr. Huntsman has collected to-date are included below.

Copies of Lael Morgan’s new biography of Ray Wise Mala, “Eskimo Star,” will be available for purchase, in addition to a limited number of Ann Fienup-Riordan’s out-of-print “Freeze Frame: Alaska Eskimos in the Movies,” and DVD sets of the 1936 Republic Pictures serial, “Robinson Crusoe of Clipper Island,” starring Ray Mala.
