The 25th Annual Morris Thompson Memorial Golf Classic was a tremendous success, bringing together golfers, sponsors, volunteers, and supporters for two memorable days of competition, generosity, and community celebration. Blessed with perfect weather and a record-breaking turnout, this year’s event highlighted the enduring impact of Morris Thompson’s legacy while raising more than $280,000 to support Doyon Foundation scholarships and programs.

The festivities began on June 18, 2026 at Chena Bend Golf Course with the Skills Tournament, where golfers showcased their talent and competitive spirit under sunny skies. That evening, supporters gathered at the Westmark Fairbanks Hotel for the Calcutta Reception, featuring live and silent auctions, refreshments, and an atmosphere filled with excitement and friendly competition.

The main event, an 18-hole golf tournament, took place on June 19 at Chena Bend Golf Course on Fort Wainwright. Twenty-seven teams took to the course, competing for prize money, bragging rights, and the opportunity to win back their Calcutta bids. One of the most inspiring moments of the tournament came from the champions team, which donated their entire winnings back to Doyon Foundation. Their contribution totaling just over $11,000, exemplifying the generosity and community spirit that have defined the Golf Classic for the past 25 years. Thank you Justin, Colby, Luke and Ashlee.

Katrina Erick, Interim Executive Director, reflected on the milestone event: “We had a historic turnout for our 25th annual Morris Thompson Memorial Golf Classic and Calcutta events. We couldn’t be prouder to work alongside a record number of volunteers and are overwhelmed by the generosity of our donors and golfers. In the true spirit of Morris Thompson, we continue to support future leaders as they pursue their dreams.”

The Golf Classic was established in honor of the late Morris Thompson, who served as President and CEO of Doyon, Limited from 1985 until his passing in 2000. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Morris Thompson Competitive Scholarships, awarded to Doyon shareholders pursuing higher education who embody Morris’ legacy of vision, excellence, leadership, and integrity.

In 2025, Doyon Foundation awarded more than $1.7 million in scholarship funding, including $40,000 through the Morris Thompson Competitive Scholarships. Since the scholarship program was established, Doyon Foundation has awarded 353 Morris Thompson Competitive Scholarships totaling $833,930, helping students pursue their educational goals while carrying forward Morris’ commitment to leadership and service.

As Doyon Foundation celebrates the 25th anniversary of this signature event, the success of this year’s tournament demonstrates the remarkable generosity of our sponsors, donors, golfers, volunteers, and community partners. Their support ensures that future generations of Doyon students will continue to have access to educational opportunities for years to come.

Doyon Foundation extends its heartfelt gratitude to our sponsors, auction donors, Howie Thies, and every golfer, guest, and volunteer who helped make this milestone event such an overwhelming success. We couldn’t do it without you.
