In partnership with Alaska Career and Postsecondary Education and Alaska 529, Doyon Foundation is seeking volunteers for 1-hour in-person sessions to share your personal postsecondary career pathway experiences and advice as part of a 3-5 person Kids2Careers Postsecondary & Career Prep Panel.
Panelists typically speak for 5-10 minutes and then participate in a Q&A with students. These panels are not career fairs but rather opportunities to share your personal postsecondary and career planning stories. These stories could include helpful steps you took in high school, things you wish you knew in high school to make the transition to postsecondary easier, ways to overcome homesickness, as well as inspirational experiences and available resources in postsecondary education and career training. We have a short video and panelist tips on our Volunteer Page (linked below) to give a general idea of what panels are like, along with sample questions to inspire ideas. After a brief round of panelist introductions, you’ll have 10-15 minutes to share your story. Please consider engaging students by asking and answering questions during your presentation instead of waiting until the end. From my experience, when students ask questions during your talk, they guide the conversation in a way that best meets their needs. Based on the questions students ask, it might be helpful to hear answers from multiple panelists. Students will be just as interested in your current and past career experiences as they are in your stories about career preparation, college life, overcoming challenges, and lessons learned!
