Franklin Thompson

Hometown: Fairbanks, AK

Franklin Thompson graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Drawn to its real-world applications, Franklin found his passion in structural engineering, where he now designs safe, stable buildings and infrastructure across Alaska.

As the owner of FST Structural Engineering, Franklin provides consulting services for commercial and residential projects. He works closely with contractors, architects, and fellow engineers to bring meaningful projects to life—many of which he sees proudly standing across his hometown and the state. In the coming months, he plans to continue growing his consulting business, with long-term goals of mentoring the next generation of engineers.

Franklin’s educational journey was significantly shaped by the support of the Doyon Foundation, which awarded him a competitive scholarship in 1996. That opportunity not only helped him take a break from full-time work to focus on his studies but also introduced him to the consulting world through an internship with Design Alaska. He credits that early experience and the encouragement from his future mother-in-law who helped him apply as foundational to his career success.

Beyond his professional life, Franklin is an active sports enthusiast. He enjoys golfing, skiing, and playing softball, and finds joy in watching and coaching his daughters in their athletic pursuits.

His advice for students? “Don’t get overwhelmed by the big picture. Focus on the steppingstones, celebrate your wins along the way, and find healthy ways to manage stress. One day, you’ll look back and even miss the grind.”
