Golf Tournament was Held June 18 – 19

Doyon Foundation’s ninth annual Morris Thompson Memorial Golf Classic was held on June 18 – 19, 2009 at the Chena Bend Golf Course on Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska.

This fun, annual event benefits the Morris Thompson Scholarship Fund, an endowed fund established by Doyon Foundation to benefit Alaska Native, higher education students studying business management and leadership. Both the golf classic and the scholarship fund were established in honor of the late Morris Thompson, who served as president/CEO of Doyon, Limited from 1985 until his passing in 2000.

During the 2008 – 2009 academic year, the Foundation awarded a total of $52,000 in Morris Thompson scholarships. The Foundation expects to maintain a consistent funding level for 2009 – 2010.

These scholarships go to support the educational efforts of deserving Alaska Native students like Samantha Smith, a Morris Thompson scholarship recipient who is studying to become a pharmacist at the University of New Mexico.

“Doyon Foundation has helped me tremendously financially towards pursuing my education. It is easier to focus on getting the best education possible without money woes. I want to know that I obtained all the knowledge possible to help my patients in the future,” Smith said.

There are many ways to support the Morris Thompson Memorial Golf Classic as a sponsor. For more information on the classic and sponsorship opportunities contact the Scholarship Program Manager at 1.888.478.4755 ext. 2050, 907.459.2050 or foundation@doyon.com.
