WWAMI is a collaborative medical school among universities in five northwestern states ( Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho) and the University of Washington School of Medicine.. They offer several programs for students interested in medicine and other health-care careers. Two are high school summer programs, and one is the spring Alaska PreMed Summit (for anyone interested in the process of becoming a physician).
1. For several decades, the UAA Della Keats/U-DOC Summer Enrichment Program has provided an exciting and valuable opportunity for Alaska high school students interested in medicine and other health-care careers, and this summer the tradition will continue! We are looking for Alaskan students who could benefit from the experience of living and learning on a college campus for six (6) weeks. Alaskan high school juniors or seniors who meet one or more of the following eligibility criteria may apply: ethnic minority background; economically disadvantaged; living in a rural area of Alaska; English as a second language; first-generation American; first in family to go to college. The program flier is attached. Theapplication and recommendation forms may be downloaded from our website: http://biomed.uaa.alaska.edu/dk_udoc.html.
□ Program Dates: June 27 – August 6, 2010
□ Application Deadline: Monday, March 29, 2010
2. The 2010 Alaska PreMed Summit: How do you prepare for a career in medicine? What should you do while you’re still in high school? How do you apply? What makes an application to medical school competitive? What are the best interview skills? Information on these topics, and more, will be presented at the fifth annual Alaska PreMed Summit, to be held Saturday, March 27, 2010. Students in high school or college are invited to attend–as well as their parents, counselors, and teachers. Last year’s Summit attracted nearly 200 participants, who gave an enthusiastic “thumbs up” to the event, to the four locations statewide. The informational flier is attached, and the registration form is available on our website: http://biomed.uaa.alaska.edu/pre_med_summit.html.
