The Alaska Native Heritage Month committee presents the Alaska Native Visionary Awards, which is the first of its kind. It aims to recognize and honor Alaskan Natives who are perpetuating and preserving culture through artistic and visionary ventures such as film, photography, music, visual and literary art, performance art and so much more.

This type of an award showcases individuals that perpetuate culture in a unique way that is enticing to the younger generation. They are people that are making their traditions relevant in today’s ever changing technological age. An example of this may be a video that shows the audience about specific cultural traditions, dances and way of life. It could also be a song that is composed by a Native artist about the troubling issue of suicide in our Native communities. These are just a few examples of how these individuals aspire to uphold their culture in a way that is accessible to a diverse group of people, whether they be rich, poor, young, old or anything in between. It is an opportunity to give back to our rich cultural community in new, fun and innovative ways.
