Ageya Wilderness Education is excited to announce they will again be providing two exciting 24-day Science and Math camps this summer in Homer, Alaska. Funding for the program is through the Alaska Native Educational Grant with the goal of increasing science and math skills and career interests among Alaska Native youth. Alaska Native students currently in the 8th grade at your school are eligible to apply.
All costs for the students to attend camp are provided, including travel to and from the camp, housing, meals, instruction and camp supplies. As an important extension of the camp, students will receive nine monthly mentoring/life coaching sessions by phone. Coaching will focus on supporting the students in balancing their lives and in pursuing future life and career goals while addressing any personal challenges they may be experiencing. Coaches will also be in monthly contact with the parent or guardian of the student and the student’s mentor teacher as a way to coordinate community resources to build strong support systems.
AWE camp is located in Homer on 80 acres overlooking Kachemak Bay. During the camp, students will be building a 30-foot Umiak and a traditional Bidarka kayak using hand tools. Participants will study seven natural history subjects: Marine Biology, Plants, Animals and Tracking, Fish, Birds and Weather, and Tides. While participating in fun, hands-on activities, students will learn how to utilize the field resources for each natural history area. In addition, students will spend two days at the Kasistna Bay Marine lab, tide-pooling and studying marine biology in the marine wet lab. Towards the end of camp, students will spend seven days camping and paddling around Kachemak Bay. The Traditional Chief for the Doyon Region, Don Honea, will provide cultural guidance and support to the camp.
