FAI Annual Elders & Youth Conference
The Theme for the 2011 Elders and Youth Conference is “Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Present, Preparing for the Future” and will be held October 17th through 19th at the Dena’ina Civic and Convention Center in Anchorage, Alaska. Nearly 1,500 Elders and youth participants from rural and urban Alaska gather each year at this engaging and unique conference, hosted by the First Alaskans Institute, and held during the Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) Convention week. The core purpose of the Conference is to develop leadership in our Native youth – leadership strengthened with the experience and wisdom of our Native Elders. For many participants (ages 12-18) the conference provides their first opportunity to attend a statewide gathering and to engage in serious dialogue on issues relevant to Alaska Native people. The conference also strives to: – Provide an opportunity for statewide networking, sharing, discussion, and community building. – Inspire pride in cultural identity and heritage. – Strengthen participants’ understanding of topics of interest relevant to the Alaska Native community so they become empowered to share their knowledge with others. – Prepare participants to take action after the conference by continuing the learning and sharing process in their communities.
