Students who applied for a Doyon Foundation scholarship are in for a pleasant surprise when fall 2015 awards are distributed – increased scholarship amounts to help pay for tuition, books and other academic expenses!
The Foundation board of directors approved a significant increase of scholarship amounts at its May 2015 meeting. The increased amounts will be awarded to students starting with the fall 2015 semester.
“We understand the cost of higher education continues to increase year after year, and we want to ensure we are providing our students with the financial support to make a meaningful difference,” said Foundation Board President Lanien Livingston.
The increases include:
Scholarship Type | Previous Amount | Increased Amount |
Full Time Basic | $800 | $1,200 |
Part Time Basic | $400 | $800 |
Competitive – Undergraduate or less | $3,000 | $5,000 |
Competitive – Graduate | $5,000 | $7,000 |
Competitive – Doctorate | $7,000 | $9,000 |
Short-Term Vocational | $400 | $1,000 (up to $1,000 or cost of class) |
The advanced college credit scholarship amount will remain the same, with the award being up to $400 or the cost of the class. Also, the increase also does not apply to special competitive scholarships, such as corporate-funded, field-specific and memorial scholarships, which have varying funding amounts.
One additional change is that basic, short-term vocational and advanced college credit scholarships will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Unlike the competitive scholarships, which are awarded through a competitive review process, these scholarships are awarded to all students who meet the eligibility guidelines and submit a completed application by the appropriate deadline. Going forward, if the number of basic scholarship applicants increases and exceeds the Foundation’s annual scholarship budget, scholarships will be awarded to eligible applicants in the order that completed applications were received, based on the online application time/date stamp.
As a reminder, there are three scholarship deadlines each year:
- March 15 for basic scholarships for the summer semester
- May 15 for basic and competitive scholarships for the fall semester
- November 15 for basic scholarships for the spring semester
Short-term vocational and advanced college credit scholarship applications are accepted year-round.
