Professor William L. Iggiagruk Hensley is teaching a one credit – one weekend course he has titled “Traditional Values and the Modern Native Corporation”. The class will take place on February 12 at 5pm-9pm and February 13, from 8:30 to 4:30pm in Rasmuson Hall, Room 303.
It will be a fascinating account of how Alaska Natives have taken alien institutions and invigorated them with traditional values. There will be an exploration of the use of the Regional corporation, village corporation and a tribal council and their unique approaches to issues of leadership, land selection, programs and some of the tensions created as they sought to implement these new forms of management.
Leaders who started early in the formation of the corporations and younger leaders who are carrying on what their elders started will be a part of this class. Arctic Slope Regional Corporation will have presentations by Oliver Leavitt, former Chairman of the Board, Butch Lincoln, EVP and Chief Operating Officer; Afognak, Inc. will have Marci Orth, VP of Shareholder Services; Cook Inlet Tribal will have Gloria O’Neill, President and CEO and Sealaska will be represented by President and CEO, Anthony Mallott.
