The Doyon Foundation journey doesn’t end with graduation! We are so proud of our alumni, the amazing places they have gone on to, the achievements they are making, and the positive differences they are having in their communities. Each month, we feature an update on one of our alumni. This month, we are pleased to highlight Sunny Guerin!

Where are you from?

I am from Gwichyaa Zhee, raised on a trap line way up river. My parents are Julie Cadzow and Gene Mahler. I currently live in Anchorage with my family.

What is your educational background?

I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Public Communication from the University of Alaska Anchorage.

What are you doing now?

I currently serve as a community relations director for the Anchorage Police Department.

I am an avid learner and currently learning the Gwich’in language. I appreciate the online lessons through the Doyon Foundation to help me grow my vocabulary and conversational skills.

For the past 10 years, I have been a licensed foster home to provide a safe place for our most precious resource – our children. If you can’t find me at work, I am probably volunteering for one of my kids’ many sporting events.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Mahsi’ to all the donors of the Doyon Foundation. I highly encourage current and future students to chase your dreams, don’t settle for mediocrity, and never be afraid to start over. Sometimes you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find your perfect match!

Are you a former Doyon Foundation scholarship recipient who has graduated? We would love to hear from you! Please reach out to [email protected] or 907.459.2049.
