Doyon Foundation student Teresa Fields has a clear picture in her mind of what she wants to do. 
Originally from Birch Creek, Alaska, Fields is currently living in Peoria, Ariz., where she is pursuing an associate’s degree in digital photography at Phoenix College.
After she graduates in December 2010, she would like to continue her education and obtain a bachelor’s of fine art degree in photography. In the future, she “would love to cross Alaska and photograph villages and residents.”
Doyon Foundation has supported Fields’ vision by providing the aspiring photographer with scholarships.
“It doesn’t seem like a lot of money, but it was great. It was enough so I could concentrate on my studies. It just made it bearable and not too stressed. I really appreciate all the help,” Fields said.
Like all students, Fields has faced challenges along the way. Her biggest challenge to date was getting a laptop and digital camera so she could get her class work done. Her advice for other students?
“You just need to get the mindset to get this done and learn as much as possible. If I can do this as a grandma, you can do it. Manage your time, and get everything done on time, so you don’t lose credit points. And attend class – you can’t learn if you don’t go,” she said.
While her studies keep her busy, Fields said she enjoys volunteering at a local children’s home when she is able. Her work was also featured at the Eric Fischl Gallery as part of the Phoenix College Student Art Show.
Fields is the daughter of Florence James and the granddaughter of Lena George from Stevens Village, Alaska.
