Inuit Circumpolar Council-Alaska is currently seeking a detail oriented, highly organized and experienced Traditional Knowledge/Science Advisor. The position is located in Anchorage, Alaska and the annual salary is D.O.E.
GENERAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The position will work to implement the objectives under the Traditional Knowledge/Science Development Project, including but not limited to:
- Conduct assessment, identify and prioritize research activities for the organization and work with the other ICC offices to find areas of collaboration with existing activities and projects.
- Develop a research plan for a comprehensive baseline assessment and analysis of the Arctic food chain in the Alaskan Inuit regions.
- Develop and work with leadership to implement a plan for meaningful engagement in research work occurring in the Arctic Council and other research forums of interest to Alaskan Inuit.
- Review and monitor Arctic Council research activities and projects, (with focus on the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF) and Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment (PAME) working groups and issues related to climate change, marine shipping, commercial fishing and offshore oil and gas development) and advise ICC Alaska leadership on current research activities.
- Engage with partners such as Oceana on mapping projects and coordinate with similar research activities occurring in the Alaska Inuit regions.
- Work with the grant writer to develop funding plan for research activities and assist grant writer in researching and writing grants to carry out implementation plan.
- Promote the use of traditional knowledge in scientific research.
- Conduct an analysis and monitor international, federal and state regulations, policies and statuses related to the Arctic research agenda and in particular in Alaska.
- Provide quarterly progress reports to ICC Alaska.
- Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Master’s degree related to traditional knowledge/science field is preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree and/or a minimum of 5 years of experience related to work in the traditional knowledge /science field.
- Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.) skills
- Excellent communication skills including the ability to maintain a courteous and professional demeanor with member and affiliate organizations. Excellent writing skills are required.
- Ability to learn, work independently, organize and prioritize work.
- Problem solving abilities with high attention to detail and accuracy a must.
- Experience with Inuit or Alaska Native non-profit organizations preferred.
