Dear Fellow Alaska Educators,

I’m hoping you can help me increase the number of students from Alaska who apply for Horatio Alger Scholarships. Last year, there were only four students from the entire state who completed their applications for the 6 scholarships available for Alaska (1 $20,000 national and 5 $5000 state level awards). This means that a lot of deserving scholars are missing out on money that could make the difference between attending college or not.

If you know a senior who has critical financial need and who has demonstrated integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity; could you make them aware of this opportunity? All the information is online at https://www.horatioalger.org/scholarships/index.cfm

Note that applicants do not need to be students with top grades; the requirement is a 2.0 GPA. Nor do they need any particular SAT or ACT score. The scholarship committee is looking for students who have demonstrated the ability to deal with problems and who have contributed to their communities. I imagine you know many students who fit these criteria and could make good use of the support. The recipients receive much more than just money. They become part of a group that meets in person in Washington, D.C. and they continue to receive support throughout their schooling. It’s an amazing opportunity!

Interested students should start the application process now because the firm deadline for completion is October 30. Please email or call me if I can answer any questions.

Thanks for your help in getting the word out,

Elaine Griffin
